How to Negotiate a Salary Offer in Ireland

Updated October 2026

Negotiate after you have a written offer, not before. At that point the employer has decided they want you and your leverage is highest.

Research a realistic range using several sources: recruiter salary guides, job ads with published ranges and people in similar roles. Decide your target and your walk-away number before the conversation.

Respond warmly first, then counter with a specific figure justified by evidence of the value you'll bring, such as results from past roles. Asking for a number slightly above your target leaves room to settle.

If the base salary won't move, ask about other elements: a sign-on bonus, extra annual leave, pension contribution, remote working days, training budget or an early pay review at six months.

Get the final agreement in writing before resigning from your current job. A stronger CV and clear achievement evidence make every negotiation easier, so refresh yours before the next round.
