References and Background Checks: What Employers Ask For

Updated October 2026

Most employers ask for two references, usually from your current or most recent manager and one other. Ask people before you name them and tell them about the role you are applying for.

Provide current contact details and a short note on how you worked with each referee. A referee who knows what the employer is looking for gives a more useful reference.

Typical checks include confirming employment dates and job titles, right to work and, for some roles, qualifications, credit or Garda vetting. Vetting applies to roles involving children or vulnerable adults.

Make sure your CV dates and titles match what a former employer will confirm. Small inconsistencies can look like dishonesty.

If a reference may be difficult, tell the new employer early and offer an alternative such as a senior colleague or client.
